Reproduction Agreement & Fees

The Nelson Provincial Museum manages the reproduction of its collections for several reasons: it helps the Museum to ensure that images of collection items are used in a way that preserves their integrity, without compromising the beliefs and values of donors or cultural groups to whom we are responsible. Income from reproductions goes partly towards covering costs and caring for the collections.

Permission to Reproduce

Permission to reproduce or display images of collection items from The Nelson Provincial Museum's collections are requested in writing. A reproduction form will need to be completed before permission can be granted. Completion of this form does not constitute permission to reproduce.

When the Museum receives a completed application, it will assess the application and advise by letter if permission has been granted.

The Museum reserves the right to refuse any application. Permission may not be granted if the image in question is of a sensitive nature in cultural or religious terms or the requested use threatens the integrity of the image.

The Museum reserves the right to refuse to copy any material for research purposes or for reproduction in another format.

Reasons to refuse copying may include:

• Material which is in poor condition and particularly fragile.
• Material which has had restrictions placed upon it by the donor or lender.
• Material which is sensitive in a cultural or religious manner.
• Material restricted by the Copyright or Privacy Acts.

Formats and Price List

The Museum provides photocopies and microfilm printouts for research purposes only and these are not for reproduction. In order to maintain the quality of images from our collection, the Museum requires that only photographic prints or digital copies are used for reproduction in a publication or other format.

Copyright

Reproduction and copyright are not the same.

The Museum may or may not hold copyright to an item in its collection. Where copyright is held by the Museum, a separate agreement and / or fee may be charged.

Where copyright is not held by the Museum, it is the client's responsibility to seek permission of the copyright holder and to meet any conditions they stipulate. The Museum will assist with locating copyright holders as much as possible.

Whether the Museum holds copyright or not, or where copyright no longer exists, the Museum will still require a reproduction agreement to be completed, and the appropriate fees paid.
