Newsflash - DINOSAUR FOOTPRINTS IN NELSON REGION

This is undoubtedly one of the really exciting scientific announcements in recent times.

Dr Greg Browne a sedimentologist from GNS Science discovered some prints in coastal rocks in the Whanganui Inlet area that he was initially unable to explain. He looked at the age of the rock, evidence of compaction, the nature of fossil pollens and other material in the same rock. He carefully ruled out all the other options and was left concluding that these were indeed the first fossilized dinosaur footprints to be discovered anywhere in New Zealand. We have been lucky enough to secure a cast of one of these prints and it will be on display before Christmas. The prints will be examined by other scientists from around the world in the next few months but you can see a cast of one for yourself. We have also built a model of the end of a leg that could be like the one that caused the footprint and we have video footage with an onsite explanation from Dr Browne himself.

Help Us - Make it Digital - Nelson Photo News 1960 - 1972

The Museum and the Nelson Public Libraries are currently investigating the possibilities of conducting a collaborative project to digitise the first run of the Nelson Photo News published between 1962 and 1972. In order to make this project happen we are applying for a grant from DigitalNZ and we need your help!!!

To qualify for funding the project idea has been posted on DigitalNZ's Make it Digital website for community input. We need you to visit the website and cast a vote for the project. The more votes the project receives the better chance it will have of receiving funding. Please feel free to leave a comment as well.

The first run of the Nelson Photo News is a rare and unique photographic record of life in Nelson in the early 1960's and 1970's - a time of rapid social and cultural change. The serial captures personal and community events through photographs and lively commentary. Once digitised it will be made available online and will become a valuable heritage resource for all to use.

Views from the Past

Ellis Winery Clifton C1906
Ellis Winery Clifton C1906, Tyree Studio Collection, 182342/3

It is probably a little known fact that award winning wine was being produced in the top of the South Island as early as 1889. F M Ellis and Sons Winery at Clifton near Takaka secured a first place at the South Seas Exhibition held in Dunedin that year and judging from this Tyree Studio image, it appeared to be a thriving business. Taken in 1906 the photograph shows a worker washing out the hogshead barrels prior to filling with wine made from grapes, cherries and the wild passionfruit that grew on the property.

Francis Henry Montague Ellis, seen here on the dray to the left, is reputed to have spent his first years in Golden Bay as a goldminer for the Washbourne family before taking up a claim himself. A descendant of Ursula Ellis, the baby in the picture, told us that after spending a year in England learning the wine trade, Francis established the Clifton winery in 1868. At the time this photograph was taken the business had passed to Harry Ellis. In later life Ursula herself remembered spending time as a child with her air gun keeping the birds off the precious fruit.

Little else is known about Ellis Winery except one local residents recollection of a devastating incident about 1916. During a flash flood, the powerhouse, paddocks of vines, the winery and its contents were washed down to the sea but the business must have recovered as Harry Ellis continued for several decades making wine that was sold throughout New Zealand.

The Greatest Survival Story Ever Told SHACKLETON
Geoff Selley delivers Dr Hussey's original lecture of the ill-fated 1914-1917 Shackleton Antarctic expedition

The Nelson Provincial Museum is delighted to present Dr Hussey's lecture (true to original notes) and the magic-lantern slides of Frank Hurley delivered by the current custodian of these treasures, Geoff Selley. This lecture will be a highlight of our 2010 programme.

The lecture tells the full story of the ill-fated 1914-1917 Antarctica expedition through the eyes of expedition member Dr Hussey, the survival after the loss of their ship and of Shackleton's epic boat voyage through stormy seas to South Georgia to bring help to his party.

On his return to England, Dr Hussey toured Britain giving this same lecture to interested groups. The lecture has been delivered for 80 years.

The lecture is delivered in association with Antarctic Heritage Trust. All money donated on the night will be given to them for the continued protection and care of the bases of Scott and Shackleton which today still stand in Antarctica. We will gratefully receive your donations on their behalf.

Sounds Amazing is a hands-on exploration of sound and music.
What a great start for the new exhibition, almost a hundred people a day for the first two weeks. Mosaic World Music attracted a huge crowd, the Rabbit Eared Bowers delighted everyone and William Fairbairn entertained us with a great variety of music out in the roof garden. We have lots more special treats in mind so 'stay tuned' to our email newsletters and to our media partners for this exhibition - Classic Hits FM and Newstalk ZB 1341AM.

School Education Programme

Sounds Amazing
23 October 2009 - 7 February 2010

Sounds Amazing is a hands-on exploration of sound and music. It is certainly worth a visit! This exhibition comes from the same people that created the widely acclaimed Body in Action that delighted nearly 30,000 people. At this stage the education programmes are fully booked but there may be room for a small number of classes on end of year excursions. These groups must be booked or admission charges will apply.

Interacting with Sounds Amazing
School programme for 2010

There are a number of smaller exhibitions which have strong education programming potential on the horizon for next year. We start with an exhibition about NZ's first naturalised Chinese migrant, Appo Hocton. This will allow groups to explore migration as a cultural experience and its impact on our cultural diversity here in the Nelson / Tasman region.

Later toward Term 2 we will have the acclaimed Treaty2U exhibition.

We are also exploring a possible exhibition on a war theme to open on Anzac Day.

Teachers with an interest in any of these possibilities are invited to contact education@museumnp.org.nz
