The Anglican Church in Nelson
The Nelson Anglican Diocese is planning celebrations in September this year, through until April 2009, to mark the foundation of the Diocese in 1858-9. When Queen Victoria granted permission for a bishopric, or see, to be centred on Nelson, it was the beginning of Nelson's status as a city. The Committee planning the Diocesan celebrations, headed by Rev Canon Mark Chamberlain, has asked Museum Educator Imogen McCarthy to write a short history of the early years of the Anglican Church in Nelson, suitable as a teaching resource and incorporating photographs from the Nelson Provincial Museum's collection.
This resource has also been created to provide context and inspiration for the Primary School Art Competition for Years 2 to 6, being held by the Anglican Diocese. All primary schools in the Nelson-Tasman region have been posted details of this competition, but if you cannot locate them, please email markc@nelsonanglican.org.nz. This and other information about the anniversary is also on the website www.nelson150.org.nz . The competition closes on Thursday 14 August and the specific guidelines are included in the mailing. There will be an exhibition of art works in Nelson Cathedral in the September-October school holidays and the winners will receive book vouchers from Page & Blackmore Booksellers.

Body in Action: The show that puts your body to the test
Imagine walking up the steps through a wide open mouth, sliding down the throat and ending up in the stomach of an enormous walk-on board game! Body in Action centres around the Guts Game - a board game with a difference. As you tour through the stomach and intestines, learn about what happens to your food as it makes its way through your body. Other hands-on exhibits examine such things as Muscles, Bones, Eyes, and Touch. Programme suitable for all ages. Body in Action has come from Te Manawa in Palmerston North.
This resource supports the Body in Action exhibition we are hosting from August 2, 2008 to November 14, 2008.
